attempt + to V原 = attempt + N = make an attempt + to V原 = make an attempt at N / Ving
▶ 例 1：我試圖和他握手，但是他舉起他的手，拒絕握手。
I attempt a handshake, but he puts his hand up, refusing to shake it.
= I attempt to shake hands with him, but he puts his hand up, refusing to shake it.
= I make an attempt to shake hands with him, but he puts his hand up, refusing to shake it.
= I make an attempt at shaking hands with him, but he puts his hand up, refusing to shake it.
註：attempt 尤指做困難的事，和不成功的嘗試。
▍tempt (v) lure / entice 引誘
tempt 衍生而來的「名詞」temptation 意指「誘惑」。tempt 衍生而來的「形容詞」tempting 意指「誘人的」。
▶ 例 1：輕鬆就可賺得的不義之財誘使 Holly 成為詐騙份子。
Easy money tempts Holly into becoming a con artist.
= Easy money tempts Holly to become a con artist.
= Holly is tempted by easy money to become a con artist.
註：tempt sb to V原 = tempt sb into N / Ving：誘使某人做某事。
▶ 例 2：我很難抗拒剛烤好的麵包的誘惑。
I find it hard to resist the temptation of the freshly-baked bread.
▶ 例 3：這杯子蛋糕是如此地誘人，以至於我忍不住咬了一大口。
The cupcake was so tempting that I couldn’t help taking a big bite.
結論：attempt 意指 try。tempt 意指 entice。
