單字講座 136：heal (v) / heel (n)

超乎想像，原來高跟鞋也曾是男性穿著的一環！早期的高跟鞋其實是為波斯騎兵而設計的戰靴，鞋跟凹陷處正好能卡住馬蹬，讓騎兵在馬上作戰時能夠穩住身體。17世紀中，法國國王路易十四在時尚圈引領風騷，除了讓絲襪、假髮、香水盛極一時外，也讓配有4吋紅色鞋跟(約10.2公分)的高跟鞋成了皇族的標誌。到了18世紀，女性才成為高跟鞋的購買主力。話說「鞋跟」是 heal 還是 heel 呢？下方說分明。


▍heal (v) 治癒
▶ 例 1：雖然被鄰居的狗咬傷的傷口已差不多痊癒，但是還是留了個疤。
The bite from my neighbor’s dog had almost healed, but there would always be a scar.

▍heel (n) 鞋（襪 / 腳）跟 / 掌根
▶ 例 1：穿著高跟鞋，她比她男朋友高。
In her high heels, she was taller than her boyfriend was.

▶ 例 2：凌晨5點被我鄰居隆隆作響的車聲吵醒，我用掌根揉了揉眼睛。
Awaking to my neighbor’s rumbling car at 5 a.m., I rubbed my eyes with the heels of my hands.
