文法講座四十：given 用法和句型

“given” 一詞常見的用法有以下二種：

• given 用在假設語氣的句子中，意指「若有…」或「假設…」。注意句子主詞和 given 那一句的主詞保持一致。
例句：若照顧得宜，蘭花將可擁有持久的賞花期。

Given the right care, the orchids will give a long-lasting flower display. 

意思等同於：

If the orchids are given the right care, the orchids will give a long-lasting flower display. 

主要句和 given 那句的主詞一致，都是 the orchids。
例句：若再給我第二次機會，我將不會犯同樣的錯誤。

Given a second chance, I won’t make the same mistakes. 

意思等同於：

If I am given a second chance, I won’t make the same mistakes. 

主要句和 given 那句的主詞一致，都是 I。


• 「given + N」或「given that + S + V」意指「考慮到…；有鑒於…」   
例句：有鑑於農曆新年即將到來，這裡有些送禮的好點子。

Given that Chinese New Year is coming, here are some great gift ideas.
Given the approaching Chinese New Year, here are some great gift ideas. 

例句：考慮到他缺乏經驗，他的表現已經很不錯了。

Given that he is inexperienced, he has done an excellent job.
Given his lack of experience, he has done an excellent job.
