單字講座 74：deprive (v) / rid (v)

報載有名少年和朋友打賭鬥氣，花了台幣 500 元做了全臉刺青，事後因難忍旁人異樣眼光而上網求助。然而，去除刺青恐非易事！皮膚科醫師指出，去除刺青其實比刺青還痛。紅色和黃色刺青不但易引發過敏，多次雷射恐怕也只能淡化，無法根除，所以刺青前，請慎思囉。話說「去除」是 deprive 還是 rid 呢？下方說分明。




▍deprive (v) 剝奪；deprive 人 of 物：剝奪某人某物
▶ 例 1：去年的車禍讓他腰部以下癱瘓，剝奪了他走路的能力。
The accident last year left him paralyzed from the waist down, depriving him of the ability to walk.

▍rid (v) 去除；rid 人 of 物：去除某人的某物
▶ 例 1：美國政府已花了超過 1 兆美金，試圖讓全國去除毒品的問題。
The US government has spent over a trillion dollars trying to rid the nation of illegal drugs.
