單字講座 80：disable (v) / unable (adj) / disability (n) / inability (n)

英年早逝的埃及法老王圖坦卡門出土百年，但是死因依舊成謎。考學家迄今仍無法確定他究竟是死於暗殺、基因缺陷，或是痲瘋病，甚或是被急馳的戰車輾斃？埃及歷史上缺少的一頁，未完待續。話說「無法的」是 disable、unable、disability 還是 inability 呢？下方說分明。




▍disable (v) 使無法運作 / 使傷殘喪失能力
▶ 例 1：炸雞時，我讓廚房的煙霧偵測器暫時無法運作。
I temporarily disabled the smoke detector in the kitchen while frying chicken.

▶ 例 2：糖尿病讓一些病患眼盲，喪失視力。
Diabetes disables some suffers by leaving them blind.

▍unable (adj) 不能的
▶ 例 1：我試著聯繫她，但無法聯繫上。
I tried to reach her but was unable to.

▍disability (n) 殘障
▶ 例 1：我被安置在為了學習障礙學生所設置的特殊課堂裏。
I was put in special classes for students with learning disabilities.

▍inability (n) 沒能力
▶ 例 1：眼盲是指沒有看見的能力。
Blindness is the inability to see.
