單字講座 48：confident (adj)/ confidential (adj)

從2300萬筆戶政資料外洩，到健保署高官盜賣民眾個資長達13年，不難看出資安已漏洞百出，詐騙或行銷電話接好接滿也因而成為生活日常。希望2024年政府能出重拳打詐，讓我們不再因個資外洩而心慌慌。話說機密資料是 confident information 還是  confidential information 呢？下方說分明！






▍confident (adj) 有信心有把握的 = assured / certain

▶ 例 1：我們有信心可打敗對手。
We are confident that we will defeat our opponents.
= We are confident of defeating our opponents.
（註）常用的句型：be confident that S + V/ be confident in（或 about / of） N

▍confidential (adj) 機密的 = secret
動詞 confide in sb 意指「交心、信任」某人，所以才會將機密的（confidential）事情告訴他。

▶ 例 1：政府正設法應對大量機密資料外洩，其中包含軍事計畫的細節。
The government is grappling with a huge leak of confidential information that includes details of military plans.
