Now zombies are making a comeback as a backlash against all the gothic, romantic vampire stories. Unlike vampires who are skilled in the arts of love and seduction, zombies are mindless, clumsy and repulsive. They don’t talk, let alone socialize with their prey. These lurching corpses just swarm the land and have an insatiable craving for human flesh. What provides the drama is the interaction and conflict among survivors in a zombie apocalypse.
AMC’s hit TV series “The Walking Dead” is one of the most vivid examples of the revival. In addition to well-choreographed carnage and gruesome slasher-film gore, The Walking Dead is a serious drama tackling moral bankruptcy in the human race.
It begins with Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes, who wakes up from a gun-shot induced coma to find zombies scavenging across the abandoned town. Staggering home, he finds his wife and son have vanished. He then heads for Atlanta to search for his family and eventually finds them and joins hands with other survivors in a camp outside of the town. Before long, he learns that he has to not only fend off the formidable zombie hordes but compete with other survivors who struggle to survive at all costs.
I enjoy “The Walking Dead” a lot and definitely recommend you check it out. You can pick up the Season 1 DVD and have a marathon before Season 3 begins.
