單字講座 124：gigantic (adj) / enormous (adj)

驚！世界上最大的生物不是藍鯨，而是「奧氏蜜環菌」蘑菇！這株巨型蘑菇占地 890 公頃，總長度大約 5.6 公里，相當於 1,665 個足球場大，且重達 35,000 噸，大到令人瞠目結舌。

 
說到「巨大的」，我們腦海中可能浮現 gigantic 和 enormous 這兩字。前者 gigantic 常用來描述「體積大」，而後者 enormous 則可用來強調「體積、數量或影響程度大」。請見下方說明。


▍gigantic (adj)（體積）巨大的
▶ 例 1：從外觀看來，這棟建築物看起來像隻體積巨大的蝸牛，這也反映出建築師對有機形體的興趣。
From the outside, the structure looks like a gigantic snail, reflecting the architect’s interest in organic shapes.
