單字講座 175：likelihood / livelihood

近來，英國諾丁漢大學的一項研究為治療牙齒敏感和預防齲齒提供了新的可能性。他們研發出一款能夠幫助琺瑯質修復和再生的新型蛋白質凝膠。透過模擬嬰兒牙齒形成時的天然蛋白質機制，在牙齒表面形成一層可填補裂縫與孔洞的堅固薄膜。話說「可能性」是 likelihood 還是 livelihood 呢？下方說分明。



▍likelihood (n) 可能性
▶ 例 1：地震過後數天，找到倖存者的可能性大大降低。

▍livelihood (n) 生計 / 生活來源
▶ 例 1：服務生的生計高度倚賴他們無法控制的因素，比如說：顧客的心情和天候狀況。
Waiters’ livelihoods are highly dependent on factors outside their control, such as customer moods and weather conditions.
